"It is Well with My Soul" written by Horatio Spafford
This classic hymn is well over 100 years old, but is still sung in churches around the world. It's a beautiful reminder of the peace that only Christ can give us - peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7) - and the hope of our salvation. Horatio Spafford wrote this hymn after suffering great tragedy in life to reflect on the hope that he still had in Christ. CLICK HERE TO READ THE STORY BEHIND THIS SONG. The first verse reminds us that in times of joy or sorrow, whatever our "lot" (condition), we still have hope in Christ. The second verse acknowledges our complete dependency on Christ. Though Satan might strike repeatedly (buffet), we have assurance that Christ has already died in our place. The third verse reminds us that our sin is nailed to the cross and we don't have to carry it any longer. Oh the bliss (perfect happiness) of this glorious that that ALL of our sin (not just part) has been paid for and we are free from condemnation! This must move us to worship Jesus. Verse 4 points forward to Christ's return and our eternity with Him. Because of Christ's work on the cross, we have hope in this life and the next. "Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, oh my soul!" |
