"Jesus Messiah" by Chris Tomlin
The first verse of this song comes directly from Scripture. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Though He lived a perfect life, Jesus had the sins of the world place upon Him as He suffered and died on the cross. We deserved God's wrath and never could have paid the price to satisfy His wrath on our own. But...because of Jesus's ultimate sacrifice, God places His righteousness on us! When we really think about what this verse and these lyrics mean, it is overwhelming! The chorus reflects on many of the names of Jesus and His role in our salvation. Messiah means "the anointed one." "Name above all names" shows His place above all other things (Philippians 2:9-11). As "redeemer" He bought us back as His own. As Emmanuel, He is "God with us." As our "rescue" He provides a way to being saved. As a "ransom", He was the payment that we owed. As "Lord of all" he has ultimate authority over everything that has ever existed. Because He rose from the grave, we have the hope of eternal life with Him, giving Him praise and glory for all eternity! |
