"I Need Thee Every Hour"
written by Annie Sherwood Hawks & Robert Lowry This song is rich with lyrics pointing to our desperate need for God. Songs like this are really prayers set to melody that help us pray collectively. The repetition in the chorus reminds us how deep our need is that we need Him every single hour - we need him ALWAYS. For the sake of clarity, let's replace the old English ("Thee") with modern English ("You") as we look at the verses. Verse 1 looks at an attribute of God - His goodness/grace. "I need (You) every hour most gracious Lord. No tender voice like (Yours) can peace afford." Only the voice of God Himself can bring us true peace. The second verse reminds us WHY we need God's grace. We are fallen and sinful humans who are prone to falling into sin. BUT, "temptations lose their power when (You are near)." When we remember God's constant presence, our temptations lose power over us as our attention is turned to Jesus. Verse 3 reminds us that we need Him no matter what we face in life. "I need (You) every hour, in joy or pain. Come quickly and abide or life is vain." Life apart from Christ is lived in vain striving after things that will never fulfill us. The fourth verse points to our sanctification as we are made into the image of God the Son - Jesus. "I need (You) every hour, most Holy One. O, make me (Yours) indeed (You) blessed Son." |
