"Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)"
Original lyrics by John Newton, Chorus added by Chris Tomlin These classic lyrics s as companies by Tomlin’s chorus tell the wonderful truth of our salvation. The original lyrics were composed by John Newton in the 1700s. “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.” Apart from Jesus, we are all “wretches” - despicable, contemptible people. That’s why the very sound of God’s grace toward those who believe is so amazing. “I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind but now I see.” Before we knew Jesus, we were lost in utter darkness. Now, with new sight, we are to walk as children of the light (Ephesians 5:8). “Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved.” The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). It’s only by the grace of God we can learn to fear Him. At the same time, this same grace RELIEVES us from our fear of anything else. “How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed.” It is only BY GRACE through faith in Jesus that we can be saved (Ephesians 2:8-10). Chris Tomlin’s additional lyrics composed in the early 2000s add a beautiful word picture to what happens after we receive the gift of salvation through Jesus! “My chains are gone I've been set free. My God my Savior has ransomed me. And like a flood His mercy rains. Unending love, amazing grace.” |
